Every year the Club hosts the Sir Nick Faldo Commemoration Jug competition, inaugurated in 1988 to commemorate Sir Nick Faldo winning The Open Championship.

As a junior member of Welwyn Garden City Golf Club, Sir Nick Faldo M.B.E. won the club championship twice, in 1974 and 1975. On 18th July 1987 at Muirfield he won The Open Championship, his first of three victories in that event.

At that time, the members of this Club thought it would be appropriate to commemorate his win by inaugurating a competition between club champions, to be played annually at Welwyn Garden City.

The trophy is a claret jug of unique design, not intended to be a replica of the famous Open trophy, but one which suitably signifies the reason for the creation of this competition.

Commemoration Jug

We are proud to be associated with Nick Faldo, and we are equally proud of the competition we have created and which has developed into one of the foremost amateur competitions in the land.

The competition is open only to current Club Champions of EGU affiliated clubs, and previous winners of the event; with details sent to all clubs to return with their club champion’s details, and the entries balloted out to obtain the top 66 entrants for the start sheet.  The competition is one of the Hertfordshire Golf Men’s Order of Merit qualifying events.

Date of the 2020 Sir Nick Faldo Commemoration Jug:
Saturday 1st August 2020

Entry Open to all 2019 Club Champions – if you have not received your invitation, please contact your club office or us for an entry form.

Some feedback from the 2016 Commemoration Jug:

What a great experience it was for me to compete in the Commemoration Jug this year. I would like to congratulate you all for hosting such a terrific event. The organisation was superb, and the course was a real credit to you. Brett and his team had done a fantastic job to present the course in such fine condition.

All the staff were really friendly and made us feel very welcome.  The first person we met on arrival for the practice round on the Friday was your Captain, Tony, what a great ambassador for your Club he is.

We really cannot sing enough praises for your Club and your team.

We will be making sure that all our future club champions of Knighton Heath Golf Club are without exception registered for this event in the years to come so that others can have the same memorable experience that I and my Captain have had.  We will not hesitate to help support and promote this event around our local clubs and will recommend to anyone that they should pay you a visit, and they will not be disappointed.

We most definitely hope to return in some capacity or another.

Thanks again

Andy Nicholas – Knighton Heath Club Champ 2015
Patrick Piero – Knighton Heath Club Captain 2015/2016

Some feedback from the 2015 Commemoration Jug:

Thanks for putting on such a great competition (as ever) a couple of weeks ago, I’m already looking forward to coming back next year.  The Commemoration Jug is a fantastic event that is superbly run on a great golf course. It’s an event that will be the first on my calendar as long as I’m qualified to play in it!

Nick Brooker, 2014 Commemoration Jug Champion – Harbourn Golf Club

I just wanted to email to thank and congratulate you on such an impressive event yesterday.  I’ve been fortunate to play some big events in the past such as Sunningdale Foursomes , Open qualifying etc.. But in 25 years have never experienced such detail and attention that your members and staff provided yesterday.  If ever a template for running a ‘perfect’ event is needed then your event is it.

Well done and thank you – I will be singing the praises of Welwyn Garden City Golf Club for many years.

James Hill – Great Yarmouth & Caister Golf Club
